What is bipolar cord? Comparison with monopolar cord

What does bipolar cord mean? Comparison with monopolar cord explained

In surgery, bipolar electrosurgery is a surgical technique that uses high-frequency electrical current to cut and coagulate tissue, with the active and return electrodes located on the same instrument, typical forceps. Unlike monopolar electrosurgery, bipolar electrosurgery doesn't require a grounding pad on the patient.

Uses of bipolar cord:

Bipolar cord are used with bipolar electrosurgical instruments during procedures to:

  • 1、Hemostasis: Use thermal energy to coagulate small blood vessels and prevent bleeding.
  • 2、Cut tissue: Under certain settings, they can also be used to cut or destroy target tissue.
  • 3、Reduce thermal spread: Suitable for delicate, confined-space operations such as neurosurgery or microsurgery.

Bipolar cord vs Monopolar cord comparison:

Bipolar cord:
Current flows only between the two ends of the instrument, not through the patient's body.
No grounding pad needed.
More precise and safer, suitable for delicate operations (e.g., neurosurgery, ophthalmic surgery).

Monopolar cord:
Current flows through the patient's body to the grounding pad; thermal spread is wider.
Requires grounding pad; suitable for large operation areas.
Suitable for fast cutting and large-scale hemostasis.
